Awesomely Hybrid Wicks
Tools and Materials
1 big nail and a hammer.
6 feet of 2" (1/8" thick) kevlar\fiberglass wick. (5'7" to be exact)
Kevlar Thread and a big needle
2 1/4 x 4" threaded eye bolts
2 1/4 x 1 1/4" washers
4 1/4 nuts and two wrenches or pliers
1 pair of heavy duty scissors (to cut the kevlar)

Hybrid wicks are a combination of kevlar\fiberglass strips and cotton rag stuffing. Cotton rags have the ability to retain a greater amount of fuel than kevlar but alone, they would burn up quickly. The idea is to wrap the cotton rags with kevlar and produce a hybrid wick that will burn longer than stacked kevlar and hold up almost as well.

Another added benefit is the reduced cost of materials. Kevlar is expensive but cotton bar mop rags are dirt cheap.

Here are the left and right side cross sections of the design.

Start by cutting strips of the 2" kevlar. You will need three strip measuring 12 1/2", 12" and 9 1/2" per wick. Fold the 12" strip around the middle of the 12 1/2" strip and then loop it around as shown. Now fold one side of the 12 1/2" strip over and around the loop you made, making it flush with the bottom side of the 12" strip.

Fold the remaining side of the 12 1/2" strip on top of this. There will be some extra wick left over from the 12 1/2" strip we will fold under later. Squash the folds flat and adjust them until you get an even cross shape. Drive a big nail through all of the layers. This will give us a path to thread the 4" eye bolt. hybrid

Begin threading the eye bolt through the kevlar from the bottom. Don't thread it through the final outer long side of the 12 1/2" strip (which should be at the bottom). We will use that side to cover the bottom of the eye bolt assembly. place a nut, washer and another nut on the end of the eye bolt and tighten them thoroughly. Slide the lower layers of kevlar down the eye bolt to form an open box shape. Now take the last 9 1/2" piece of kevlar and tuck it inside the box you have made so it looks like the picture. You should have a box with three open flaps now. Cut the bar mop rag into 2" strips. You will need a little over five feet of these strips. Fold up the bar mop strips and cram them into the box as best you can. hybrid

Fold the two flaps of the 9 1/2" kevlar strip closed and then fold the remaining length of the 12 1/2" strip over them and around the base of the box. You should have a little left over here so tuck the remaining wick under itself. Using the kevlar thread, sew up the bottom flap you just folded under on all three sides. I use about an arms length of thread here and make two or three good passes on each of the three sides.
